Engineers use the word “enthalpy” to describe the amount of heat in a pound of water or steam. We needed a reference where the energy is zero and chose the temperature of ice water, 32°F. So, the enthalpy of water or steam is the amount of energy required to get a pound of water at freezing temperature up to the temperature of the water or steam at the outlet of the boiler. Since we use freezing water as a reference point, the difference in enthalpy is always equal to the amount of heat required to get one pound of water from one condition to the other.
You’ll recall from high school math that you multiply a number by itself to square it. In my boiler operator training classes I use the diagram (Figure 1-6) of a sprinkler on the lawn hooked up to a hose after a tee with a pressure gage that reads 10 psig and ask the operators what the gage should read when the flow is twice as much as shown. Almost invariably I get the answer of “20 psig” but I also get a bunch of wild guesses and it was two years before I got the right answer after hundreds of classes.
